Food Drive - December, 2008

For the month of December, WPCG hosted an internal food drive to support the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society. This donation was fully employee driven with no direct corporate dollars.
In addition to donated food, employee contributions were also given to help to purchase extra food.

Thanks to all who supported the food drive contributing to its success!

Variety: The Children's Charity - November 7th, 2008

To close out 2008, we have partnered with Variety: The Children's Charity in order to provide a lot of administrative and project-based assistance. Variety has positioned itself as an organization with some of the lowest administrative costs of any charity in the country. This is a great marketing tool and fiscally responsible, but it doesn't make the work go away.

In order to ensure that Variety can maintain its standard, we have partnered to assist in any work that they would feel comfortable outsourcing to our group of professionals. Our finance team has assisted with filing audits and our recruiters have been on board with volunteer recruitment efforts. We have also contributed to the Variety Gold Heart Campaign by getting the hearts ready for sale. This is a very special fundraiser that we are grateful to be involved with.

Charity Golf Tournament - September 19, 2008

In September of 2008, WPCG hosted a charity golf tournament to raise funds for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society (GVFBS).

The GVFBS helps feed more than 9,000 people each week in 16 depots located in Burnaby, New Westminster, Vancouver and the North Shore. Additionally, the GVFBS aids over 100 agencies within these areas, providing help to another 16,000 individuals weekly.

WPCG's Charity Golf Tournament auction raised $2500.00 for the GVFBS, donating auction prizes such as lunch with world renowned motivational speaker Peter Legge, an autographed 'Farewell Trevor Linden' painting and a hockey jersey autographed by the Calgary Flames!

WPCG would like to thank all of our clients who attended and contributed to the success of this event!

Dress for Success - June-August, 2008

During the summer months of 2008, WPCG employees volunteered with Dress for Success. Dress for Success Vancouver is a registered Canadian Charity whose mission is to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life. Each Dress for Success client receives a suit for her interviews and a small working wardrobe when she gets her job. Dress for Success Vancouver also offers an ongoing work retention and mentor program critical to each woman's long-term career success. Founded in Vancouver by Astrid Levelt, DFS opened its doors on Feb. 2nd, 1999 and operates out of space donated by the Royal Bank. It is recognized as the first international agency of Dress for Success Worldwide. WPCG was able to assist with cleaning and sorting Dress for Success' office and clothing supply, and we presented a workshop on resume writing and getting ahead in the job market for approximately 17 Dress for Success clients.

Vancouver Food Bank - May 2, 2008

WPCG's most popular external initiative is volunteering at the Greater Vancouver Food Bank and we went back again on May 2nd. So far, we have donated multiple hours and staff members to help the Food Bank's warehousing organization. The Food Bank is especially in need of donations during the spring and summer months. Monetary donations, volunteer hours, and baby supplies are especially appreciated. The Food Bank feeds over 9000 people every week, mostly families. Many of the people who use the Food Bank also volunteer there, and we were privileged to work alongside them. WPCG was excited to continue aiding this worthy organization through our CR program.

Jeans Day - April 24, 2008

WPCG is proud to be a part of Jeans Day, taking place on April 24, 2008 to benefit the BC Children's Hospital. BC Children's is the only hospital in the province solely dedicated to children's needs. Last year, the Jeans Day event involved over 150,000 people province-wide and raised over $1 million dollars. Proceeds from Jeans Day fund research, buy equipment, and make life a little brighter for thousands of BC kids. By purchasing buttons, WPCG employees will be able to wear jeans in a show of solidarity for these children and supporting a very worthy cause.

Vancouver Sun Run - April 20, 2008

On April 20, 2008 10 WPCG employees participated in the Vancouver Sun Run, the largest 10K in Canada. The Sun Run promotes awareness of physical fitness and community in our city. Plus, over $1 million dollars of race proceeds have been donated since the Sun Run's inception. The Sun Run is a wonderful expression of two of WPCG's core values, teamwork and a sense of play.

Meals-on-Wheels and Free Geek Vancouver - Mar. 19, 2008

On March 19th, 10 WPCG employees volunteered with Burnaby Meals-On-Wheels. Meals-on-Wheels is a non-profit, voluntary community service that provides hot, home delivered meals to families who for the reasons of age, illness, or disability are unable to prepare meals for themselves. This delivery not only provides nourishment for the body, but also gives a peace of mind for those who may otherwise spend the day alone. WPCG was excited to have the opportunity to go out into the community and meet and help our neighbours.

We were also able to donate three loads of used computer equipment to Free Geek Vancouver. Free Geek takes all computer-related equipment, working or not, and reuses or ethically recycles the donations. Individual volunteers learn new skills by evaluating and refurbishing systems, and non-profit organizations can receive free upgraded computer equipment. Free Geek ethically recycles 10 tons of equipment each month, thereby saving space in landfills and providing safe disposal of dangerous chemical components.

Free Geek has just qualified as the first Canadian non-profit to be an official e-steward in Basel Action Network's ethical recycling program. For more information and full story please see their official website.

Some WPCG staff said...

"This event showed us how many people really do rely on Meals on Wheels."
"I felt that Meals on Wheels was rewarding, and something I could go and do on my own again. Free Geek was also a good learning experience."
"Events like these make us more well rounded professionally and personally."

BC Women's Illuminations - Jan. 31, 2008

On January 31, WPCG assisted with the BC Women's Illuminations fundraising luncheon. Eleven WPCG employees helped with donation collection and handed out gifts. The event had a target of raising $50,000, but by the end of the session we had helped to collect over $120,000! They also had the opportunity to hear the views of Gloria Steinem, a celebrated American author and feminist. BC Women's Hospital & Health Centre is supported by its Foundation's fundraising efforts, such as Illuminations, so that it can continue to be a national leader in women's health care. BC Women's is also involved in providing academic, leadership and career opportunities to women in healthcare.
