Free Geek Vancouver: Ethical Computer Recycling

In 2008, WPCG began working with Free Geek Vancouver to ethically recycle and reuse our extra computers. Free Geek takes all computer-related equipment, working or not, and uses it to give back to the community in a few ways. Individual volunteers learn new skills by evaluating and refurbishing systems, and receive a free computer after volunteering 24 hours of their time. Additionally, Free Geek gives away free refurbished computer equipment to non-profit organisations through their Hardware Foundation. When parts are not able to be salvaged, Free Geek will ethically recycle them according to strict environmental standards. WPCG is pleased to be able to help Free Geek, the Vancouver community, and the environment at large simply by reevaluating what and how we 'throw away'."

Eco-Friendly Products

In an attempt to reduce our ecological footprint, WPCG has implemented a 'Toxic-Free' policy for our offices. As a result, we buy as many eco-friendly products as possible, including cleaning supplies, hand soap, recycled toilet paper, etc. The overhead cost of such a policy is slightly higher than if we were buying standard environmentally dangerous products, but the benefit to the environment and our community is immeasurable.
